Social
Programme
12
February 2007
In
the evening of the first conference day all participants are invited
to a dinner reception at the Restaurant Theodor Tucher.
The
restaurant is famous not only for its fine food but also for its
guests, among them the former German chancellier Gerd Schröder
and George W. Bush, the US president.
The
restaurant is located in the very heart of "political"
Berlin, next to the Brandenburger Tor and the Reichstag (domicile
of the German parliament).
13
February 2007
There
is no official programme planned for the evening of the second conference
day.
We
gathered the following information for you which you might find
useful if you want to explore Berlin by yourself.
Berlin
Tours
Bus lines 100 and 200
The city centre of Berlin stretches across several kilometres, therefore
we recommend to use public transport to explore the city. There
are several routes leading along the most important sights. On their
way from Zoologischer Garten to Alexanderplatz the bus lines 100
and 200 pass many of the major tourist attractions - riding one
of these buses is just like going on a sightseeing tour.
S-Bahn lines (urban railway)
Taking the overground S-Bahn allows you to throw a first glance
on numerous great sights. The route between the stations Zoologischer
Garten and Alexanderplatz passes Tiergarten park with the Siegessäule
(Victory Column), the Reichstag (seat of the German parliament)
with its famous cupola as well as many important federal buildings.
It also rides right through the historical Museum's Island.

Night owls with stamina can give their undivided attention to the
interesting range of pubs around Savignyplatz in Charlottenburg.

of Westkreuz and get off at Savignyplatz.
Hackesche Höfe
For starting your tour through Berlin's nightlife you shouldn't
miss the Hackesche Höfe. Here you will find a huge variety
of famous restaurants, bars and clubs.
For night owls there are, for example, options for the following
night walks: Along Oranienburger Straße (Mitte) between Oranienburger
Tor and Monbijouplatz there is one bar after the other, such as
the Zapata (Tacheles), Zosch, Silberstein or Hackbarth's.
Representatives of Berlin's legendary club scene, such as the Kalkscheune,
are also just around the corner. Thus the famous Tresor is not too
far away (Potsdamer/Leipziger Platz). The Heckmannhöfe and
further courtyards worth to see with galleries and cafés
are on the way to the legendary Hackescher Markt, which is a hive
of activity, not only in the Hackesche Höfe (courtyards) in
front of the station. The selection of bars and restaurants is just
about the limit.
How to get there: Take the S-Bahn from Hauptbahnhof in direction
of Ostbahnhof and get off at Hackescher Markt.
Prenzlauer Berg
The Prenzlauer Berg definitely also forms one of the most visited
areas at night. Russian and Jewish restaurants are enriching the
offer of food styles. Around the Kollwitz-Platz one can almost experience
a world trip considering the variety of existing restaurants.
Beginning your tour at Wasserturm and Kollwitzplatz the area around
Schönhauser Allee and Greifswalder Straße is one single
nightwalk. Whether Torpedokäfer or Café Soda in the
Kulturbrauerei, (a vast complex, Knaackstraße), Pasternak
or Luna-Bar, the number of Cafés and Pubs is a legend.
How to get there: Take the S-Bahn from Hauptbahnhof in direction
of Ostbahnhof to Friedrichstraße. Change there for the S1,
S2 or S25 in direction of Gesundbrunnen and change there for Ring
Bahn via Ostkreuz. Get off at Schönhauser Allee or Greifswalder
Straße.

Gendarmenmarkt just as well.
How to get there: Take the S-Bahn from Hauptbahnhof in direction
of Ostbahnhof and change at Friedrichstraße for the U6 to
Alt-Marienfelde. Get off at Französische Straße.
Nikolaiviertel
In the small lanes of the historical Nikolaiviertel (Nikolai quarter)
the traditional Berlin returns to life. Mitte's taverns and bars
are waking local traditions due to their old-fashioned atmosphere
and the typical homemade dishes served. Especially tourists are
appreciating this part of Berlin for its direct position beside
the Spree River and for its numerous souvenir shops. The pictured
Nikolai-church with its roots form the 13th century is one of Berlin's
oldest maintained religious buildings.

The Savignyplatz location in Charlottenburg is open around the clock
